MANCHESTER United have recovered Cristiano Ronaldo’s £13million transfer fee before he has even set foot on the pitch.

Ronaldo, 36 – who was with United from 2003 to 2009 – will today make his second debut at the club when they take on Newcastle at Old Trafford.

After £187m of Ronaldo’s replica No7 shirts sold in just one week, Man U earned £13.1m in commission – topping the £12.9m fee the club paid to Juventus.

The Portuguese superstar’s return to Manchester has generated huge interest from fans.

United’s retail partner, Fanatics, said that within four hours of his comeback announceme­nt, sales of the Ronaldo shirt surpassed the existing record for a single day’s sales of sports kit outside the US.

Ronaldo’s United contract, which is thought to be £500,000 a week, is for two years plus an optional year.

But the star has been tipped to play on until he is 40 and become the oldest scorer in the Premier League, beating former United forward Teddy Sheringham, who scored 32 goals after he turned 36.

Another United goalscorin­g legend, Wayne Rooney, 35, has told how he expects to see Ronaldo on the pitch at 40.

Rooney, now the manager of Derby, said: “I can see him playing on until that age, like Ryan Giggs.”
