Craig: We’ll adjust and fire back like before

- BY GORDON BANNERMAN

LIAM CRAIG admits St Johnstone are in a period of transition after losing key members of last season’s double cup-winning squad.

But the 34-year-old midfielder is adamant others will step up to fill the void left by Jason Kerr and Ali McCann.

Their abrupt deadlineday departures in deals totalling £2million left manager Callum Davidson with major holes to plug.

And his squad has been depleted by a string of injuries going into today’s clash with Rangers.

Vice-captain Craig, nudging closer to Steven Anderson’s club appearance record, has seen it all before.

He recalls Saints handled the loss of Stevie May and Michael O’Halloran after previous spells in Perth.

And he said: “It’s a great opportunity for the younger ones. But go through our team and there are plenty of boys with experience.

“They know how the club works, that’s why I don’t think there are massive concerns.

“It’ll take time to adjust to losing your captain and arguably your best player but others will step up.

“People are probably bored of me saying it but the success of this squad is down to the squad, never more so than last season.

“It’ll be the same moving forward. The club’s still in a good place.

“It’s up to us to create a spirit and togetherness to kick us on and start getting wins in the league.

“The continuity in the squad has always been important, even if you go back to the team that won the league and got promotion in 2009.”
