No return to Seville after Betis U-turn
CELTIC fans were left reeling last night after Real Betis blocked plans for an emotional return to Seville.
Thursday saw the go-ahead given to away fans for this week’s Europa League clash in the city 80,000 descended upon for the UEFA Cup Final under Martin O’Neill in 2003.
But Betis have made a U-turn after orders from local Andulacian chiefs, leaving thousands of supporters shut out despite buying briefs and making travel plans.
Celtic officials revealed their frustration at the last-minute let-down, 24 hours after tickets for the away end went on sale and long after many had booked up to go to amber-listed Spain.
A Hoops statement yesterday said: “On Wednesday afternoon Betis confirmed they would be accepting Celtic fans for this match and the club has been working to try to find a way to comply with requirements laid down to admit Celtic fans.
“It is therefore extremely disappointing to be told moments ago that Betis will no longer be able to admit Celtic fans to this match. Betis have indicated the local authority in Spain has now stated visiting fans will not be permitted to attend.
“While this matter is totally outwith Celtic’s control we fully understand the disappointment which will be felt by Celtic fans planning on attending.
“Wherever we play we are backed by the best support in huge numbers and it is a disappointment to all involved at Celtic and the team we will not be able to have our fans with us as we visit the city of Seville again. We remain in contact with Betis but advise our fans not to travel.”
