Car booster seat saved my boy’s life in accident

Dad insisted son stay in harness despite his age

A NINE-YEAR-OLD boy survived a horror road crash thanks to his booster seat, his dad claims.

Isaac Mitchell, from Kilmarnock, is lucky to be alive after his family were involved in a head-on collision.

The smash happened on the A759 on the way back from Troon on Friday.

Isaac no longer needs his booster according to the law.

But after the car he was in took the brunt of the smash, his parents are sure he wouldn’t be alive without it.

Dad-of-two Barry said “instinct” told him to keep his son in the chair.

The 35-year-old was cut from the wreckage after waking up to find sons Isaac and Theo, five, screaming and their mum Katie, 29, covered in blood.

They were taken to Crosshouse Hospital following the accident between Gatehead and Dundonald.

Katie cut her face and broke four ribs while the others had bruising and whiplash.

Barry said: “I felt scared, worried, and helpless. I could hear the boys screaming, seen my partner covered in blood but I was trapped.” The dad is sure his decision to keep his sons in safety seats spared them. He said: “Without a shadow of a doubt the high-back booster seats saved their lives. Issac is tall enough not to need a booster. “But we had kept him in it as instinct told us if the worst was to happen he’d have no protection. Of course we didn’t know the worst would in fact happen a few months after deciding he would stay in the seat until he was physically too big for it.

“But the car seat took the impact of the crash as the side protectors stopped him hitting off the door or window.

“It didn’t just save him, it also saved his younger brother as they both had high back booster seats fitted in the car correctly.”

Police have confirmed a 59-year-old man has been reported for alleged traffic offences.
