Celts ace Charlie nicks in to stun Hibs

- Alison McConnell

A LAST-GASP winner from Charlie Wellings bumped Hibs off the summit as Celtic and Glasgow City took over the top two.

Celtic’s 2-1 defeat of Hibs had briefly put them in control before City’s 3-1 win at Hamilton took the champions to No.1 thanks to goal difference.

Sarah Harkes – whose husband scored at Celtic Park for Dundee United yesterday – grabbed the Hoops’ opener in the 67th-minute at Airdrie’s Penny Cars Stadium.

It was cancelled out by Collete Cavanagh’s long raking effort before Wellings looped the ball into the top corner in additional time.

Hoops boss Fran Alonso said: “I am so proud. Always there is five minutes to go and still we keep going. It is so pleasing for a manager. I don’t know how many times we have scored late goals.”

Alonso’s late subs played a part in the win with Shen Mengyu and Tegan Bowie arriving just two minutes before the 90 were up.

He added: “They only had five minutes but they made a difference.

“They need to fight, it is not easy to play in this team. It is a good problem to have.

“The depth is the best we’ve had and it is why we are doing so well.”

City had to fight back at New Douglas Park after Kirstie McIntosh grabbed a surprise lead for Accies.

But goals from Jenna Clark, Clare Shine and Aoife Colvill – her first of the season – secured City a comfortable win.

Newly promoted Aberdeen are third after a 0-0 draw with Spartans, their third game unbeaten.

And Rangers were 3-0 winners at Hearts with goals from Lizzie Arnot, Nicola Docherty and Brianna Westrup.
