Jammin’ with Jamie

-

SCOT Jamie Telford had an almost out-of-body experience playing with The Jam at the famous Apollo in Glasgow.

Jamie was the piano player for Paul Weller’s group towards the end of the trio’s career and played that driving piano on final single Beat Surrender in 1982.

Jamie, whose band My Glass World have released fifth album Still Life With Machine Gun, said: “I played on the last two major Jam tours of the UK, finishing with a week at Wembley. We also played what was then the Apollo in Glasgow which I

music remember being one the noisiest and most exciting of the tour.

“Being at the back of the stage it was a bit like watching The Jam while accompanying them. Bizarre.”

Jamie got to work with the legendary group as they had the same publisher. He said: “We got on well and I ended up playing on Beat Surrender.

“I didn’t think a lot about it at the time but just bashed it out pretty successfully I think. In retrospect it was one of these moments you don’t forget. To this day I haven’t seen a royalty for that song.”

In the early 80s Jamie, from Langholm in Dumfries and Galloway, played keyboards with Everest The Hard Way and wrote and recorded a couple of albums with Richard Strange as well as working with Martin Rushent, who produced The Human League, Stranglers and Buzzcocks, and Cure producer Dave Allen.

My Glass World’s nucleus consists of him and Sean Read, whose credits include production and engineering with Edwyn Collins and Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Musicians on the new album include former Primal Scream guitarist Little Barrie, Stephen Gilchrist, who plays drums with Graham Coxon, and composer Peter Salem.

He has also composed theatre music, jingles and scored the music for rom-com I’m

Not in Love for Netflix in March. Lockdown allowed him to write two albums for My Glass World.

Jamie said: “There didn’t seem like much else to do. It really helped pass the time positively.”

Currently at his home in the Borders, Jamie will go back to London this month to work with Sean on the tracks for the second album.

As for gigs he’s waiting to see. He said: “We definitely need to gig but I’d like to see what happens with Covid this winter.” ●Still Life With Machine Gun by My Glass World is out now on Luxury Noise Records.
