MISTER WRIGHT

Tommy’s tough love just what Callum is needing

- KILMARNOCK v RAITH TODAY, 3PM, RUGBY PARK

CALLUM HENDRY is convinced some tough love from Tommy Wright can get his career back on track.

The striker reckons he played his best football under Wright at St Johnstone and is thrilled to be reunited with his old boss at second-placed Kilmarnock in midweek.

The 23-year-old is out of contract next summer and hopes to showcase his talents during his loan at Rugby Park.

Hendry, set to make his debut against Raith today, said: “I was young when he signed me. He was tough on me but that was a good thing.

“I played my best football under him. He gave me a chance and the platform to be a success – he was the first to do that.

“I think tough love is something I needed and something I need now – I have missed it!

“He pulled me into his office and said he wants me to get back to how I was before – taking fewer touches and getting into the box, scoring goals.

“Most of my goals came from six yards out and that’s what he wants again.

“I know I need to play my best football to get a good contract, wherever it is.

“But right now I’m just thinking about getting myself into this team, securing a place and scoring some goals for Kilmarnock.”

Former Killie keeper Jamie MacDonald returns to Rugby Park adamant his current team have already proven they can punch above their weight in the Championship.

The 35-year-old, whose side sit fourth, said: “I think Kilmarnock have kept the same budget from the Premiership but football isn’t decided by budgets. It helps but it’s never the deciding factor. We’ll go there full of confidence.”
