New trainer sends Deontay to film club

- CHRIS MCKENNA

DEONTAY WILDER is praying video sessions with new trainer Malik Scott will help him get revenge against Tyson Fury in Las Vegas.

Former heavyweight contender Scott has brought in what he calls “film studies” to the Bronze Bomber’s prep for the fight, which takes place in the early hours of Sunday. Scott has been

BY showing clips of former greats in the hope his man learns from them.

The main focus has been on legendary Cuban amateur Felix Savon, the three-time Olympic champion and sixtime world champion.

Scott, 40, said: “Deontay moves off of examples, so you have to show him what you’re talking about and give him reasons why he can do it because he can.

“What stops him from doing it?

“He just hasn’t been going into the toolbox and taking that stuff out. But that is what we have been doing in this camp.

“I showed him Larry Holmes, Joe Louis, Max

Schmeling, Bob Foster, Vitali Klitschko.

“I’m weird when it comes to film studies. I’ll watch a great amateur like Savon.

“He was overlooked by people in pro boxing but he is the closest to have Deontay Wilder kind of power.

“How do I know this? I see the things he did in the amateurs with 12oz gloves and he put people to asleep.

“Savon was one of the greatest Cuban fighters and I can only imagine how successful he would have been as a professional with eight or 10oz gloves on.

“There are a lot of times I show Deontay clips of Felix and how tough he was.”

It is something new Scott has purposely introduced. He was appointed Wilder’s new trainer to replace Mark Breland, sacked for throwing in the towel during the American’s second fight with Fury in February last year.

Breland had seen enough in the seventh round as Wilder took a hammering after their first bout ended in a draw.

But Scott is hoping the video sessions will help his man gain revenge.

He added: “Before, when boxing was done in the gym for Deontay, he was done.

“Me being his trainer means once he is done boxing in the gym, I’m coming up to the house to talk boxing and do film study.

“Boxing is not over because we have stopped training.”
