Gers kid in market for one thing

- BY ANDY NEWPORT

NATHAN PATTERSON is flattered by interest from England but the only flirting the Rangers full-back is interested in right now is with a Scotland starting slot.

The teenager was the subject of a failed £8million bid from Everton over the summer, while reports this week claim Manchester United are keeping tabs.

But the 19-year-old insists he’s paying no attention to speculation about his future.

He said: “Yes, that was obviously nice to see that teams are interested but I am only interested in playing football.

“That’s the stuff that comes with it and I am not really aware of anything that happens, I just go on the pitch, do my thing and let the outside talk.

“You need to keep your feet grounded and just focus on your football. That is what I have been doing. In football you have media everywhere now and you have everyone’s opinions.

“Sometimes you just need to block that out and focus on yourself, surround yourself with the right people and I feel as if I have done that.

“I have a good group of friends, good team-mates and family also who keep pushing me on to do well.”

Boss Steve Clarke will have been delighted to see the rampaging right-back given the nod in last Sunday’s 2-1 win over Hibs as Patterson started for the fifth time this season.

The player hopes he’s done enough with his limited action this term to get the call from Clarke.

On cementing a place for Scotland, he said: “It is obviously my main goal.

“But I’m still young, so I know I’m not going to get that jersey straight away.

“I just need to keep working hard for it and any opportunity I get, I need to take it.”
