Mystery donor hands building row nurse £9k
A MYSTERY donor has handed more than £9000 to a hero nurse left with a crater in her garden after a builder failed to carry out work she had paid for.
Pride of Britain award winner Agnes Malcolmson burst into tears when a nameless Good Samaritan turned up at her door in Glasgow with an envelope filled with cash to replace the savings she shelled out for her non-existent conservatory.
The donor had read in the Daily Record how Agnes was left with a large hole in her garden after a builder took her money but failed to do the work.
Stunned Agnes, 61, has vowed to keep fighting for the return of the money she handed to 1A Contracts so she can “pay forward” the kind gesture to another good cause.
She said: “I told this lady she had restored my faith in humanity. All I could do was keep hugging her.
“I was crying my eyes out and had to go for a lie down.
“I told her, ‘You’ve really touched my heart’.”
We revealed last month how dozens of customers had paid out thousands to Glasgow-based 1A but been left with nothing.
Trading Standards compiled a dossier after it was contacted by families who paid deposits thought to total about £250,000 and Police Scotland said officers were investigating allegations of fraud.
Agnes, from Carntyne, put all her spare cash into a new sun room – which was supposed to double up as a bedroom after she gave her room to her now-adult daughter with learning difficulties.
She paid £9200 over two instalments when she signed the deal in April but the work, which she says was supposed to be finished by the end of July.
Agnes told the Record of her fears that her hardearned cash was gone for good as 1A confirmed it was unable to carry out any jobs or refund cash amid the probe.
But she was left gobsmacked when she was gifted every penny back by a big-hearted visitor.
Agnes said: “I had been so miserable over this and now I feel like I’m back to my own self and can smile.”
Previously, 1A director Stephen Hughes, 42, blamed the Trading Standards probe for his inability to refund money, adding: “I am simply unable to access all the relevant areas of my business due to this investigation.”
