Fergie spent 4 months in house rediscovering his love of cooking

- BY STUART MACDONALD

SIR Alex Ferguson has revealed he got through lockdown by rediscovering his love of cooking.

The football legend said he never left the house for four months due to the pandemic but was never bored. He told how he worked in a Glasgow restaurant kitchen as a young man where he was taught to cook by football rival Sir Kenny Dalglish’s father-in-law. And the 79-year-old former Manchester United manager took on culinary duties at his home in Wilmslow, Cheshire, last year after his wife

Cathy started suffering back pain. He said: “I never went out the house for four months and it was no problem. “I can never be bored, I can always find something to read, there’s plenty of books. “I can read and you’ve got the TV. I also started doing the cooking because Cathy was having problems with her back so I was occupied all day. I can cook, I’m not bad, I can do anything. “I actually worked in a kitchen for a year when I was young and the manager was Kenny Dalglish’s father-in-law. “He was a good cook and a good publican. “It was a pub/ restaurant place just round the corner from

SOUL MATES where I lived and I was in there for about a year.”

Ferguson’s stint in the kitchen was at The Beechwood on Glasgow’s south side, which was run by Pat Harkins – the dad of Dalglish’s wife Marina.

He had bought a site in Paisley which he intended to turn into a restaurant after retiring from playing and decided he wanted to get some experience before opening up his own place.

However, he gave up the hospitality trade after forging a career as a football manager.

Ferguson, from Glasgow, was speaking during an interview on the official Manchester United podcast.

He retired from the Old Trafford hot seat in May 2013 after 27 years at the helm, during which he won 38 trophies, including two Champions League titles.
