DOUBLE MAY BE TROUBLE WARNS MUIR

- BY MARK WOODS

LAURA MUIR has admitted doubling up in a packed 2022 calendar might be a non-starter.

The Olympic 1500 metres silver medallist has been named Scottish Athlete of the Year.

Muir has her sights trained on a hat-trick of golds at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and Europeans during next July and August.

She revealed also tackling the 800m might be a step too far.

Muir said: “The last time we discussed it, we weren’t going double at a specific championships.

“Just trying to do all three is going to be hard enough, let alone doing two events at one.

“I’m not going to rule anything completely out. I want to see what my form is like.

“We do make decisions quite late to make sure that we make the best of the form that I’m in.

“I’m not going to decide anything until very close to the time but hopefully I’ll be at all three. The timetable isn’t out for the Europeans and that makes it a little bit harder still to plan.

“But 1500 works well for both the worlds and the Commonwealths because it’s at the start of the worlds and end of the Commies so, that should hopefully work. We’ll see what the Europeans can do as well.”

Fellow 1500m star Owen Miller was named as 4J Studios Scottish Para Athlete of the Year following his stunning Paralympic gold while Muir’s mentor Andy Young picked up the Performance Coach of the Year honour.

Muir says it’s a measure of the strength in depth that all of the six-strong initial crop of Team Scotland picks for the Commonwealths in Birmingham were finalists in Tokyo this summer.

She said: “You look and say they’re medal contenders and there’s others out there as well who would be strong medal hopes too.”
