I never doubted Lyndon, he’s got character.. but he’s not taking the next penalty

extra pressure on Dykes if he goes to the next one.”

Dykes’ recovery epitomised the attitude of a Scotland side who simply refused to let their moment slip.

Clarke, however, admits he was concerned after a disjointed first half.

He said: “We were disappointed with our first-half performance.

“We give a soft free-kick away on the edge of the box. Zahavi’s different class on free-kicks there and puts it directly between Jack Hendry and Lyndon.

“It’s a quality finish and you have to imagine how the lads feel about that. It takes them a little bit of time to get a foothold in the game. They do that, 1-1. It’s a great finish from John McGinn. It was the first time I felt we really got a hold of the ball and moved it around. So you’re thinking, ‘Okay, we’re good’.

“Then we concede another horrible goal. They have to find their way back into the game again, which we did just on half-time.

“That’s three big setbacks and half-time was all about just playing our way, get our tempo and rhythm on the game, show our quality. And we did that.

“It would have been an easy night to say everything’s gone against us, but we turned it round, or the players turned it around. They dug deep for it. People keep saying they don’t score goals but we needed three and we got three. That’s good.

“Also when you score late, you get that adrenaline rush, everybody’s buzzing and excited about it.

“The crowd went away happy. The Tartan Army was fantastic. It was my first experience of a good win at a full Hampden and the players went out and they enjoyed it. Hopefully they can feed off each other.”

For Clarke, the fightback just re-affirmed his belief in his stars.

He added: “I’ve been saying for a long time that this is a group who want to do well for their country and they show it every time they go out on the pitch.”
