WHO COULD WE FACE IN PLAY-OFFS?

-

THE thrilling win at Hampden took Scotland a huge step closer to securing a play-off place for Qatar 2022.

Wins over the Faroe Islands and Moldova will now ensure second place in Group F and a place in the play-offs.

They will consist of 12 teams: the 10 group runners-up and the two best Nations League group winners who don’t finish in the top two.

Those teams are then divided into six seeded and six unseeded teams, with the seeded sides hosting one-off semifinals in March.

Scotland are very likely to be one of the six seeded teams.

That means a home tie at Hampden against one of the four worst second-placed teams, or one of the Nations League group winners.

Record Sport takes a look at who we could

face as the groups currently stand.

SWEDEN

Sweden will leapfrog Spain for top spot if they win against Greece on Tuesday. Although they are currently in transition, they’d be tough to crack with Real Sociedad hitman

Alexander Isak looking to take the mantle of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

SWITZERLAND

Switzerland took control of second spot in Group C with victory over Northern Ireland.

They are tournament veterans and eliminated France at the Euros.

UKRAINE

They have yet to lose in qualifying and picked up their first win over Finland on Saturday after five draws.

CZECH REPUBLIC

No strangers after Patrik Schick’s two-goal display in the Euros at Hampden, they look like a team on the up.

WALES

There are two play-off spots available to Nations League group winners who don’t finish in the top two in their qualifying group and as things stand, Wales are one of them.

A home nations playoff at Hampden would surely get the nation rocking.

AUSTRIA

They look down and out in Group F but have the fall-back of a Nations League spot to rely on.

They’d go in unseeded regardless of how many points they finish on.
