BILLY PUTS HIS TRUST IN SQUAD

Manager knows he can rely on us to get the job done, says Gilmour

- BY SCOTT BURNS SAYS IT’S ALL JUST A MATTER OF TRUST

BILLY GILMOUR reckons Scotland are on the verge of securing a World Cup play-off because Steve Clarke trusts his squad to deliver.

And Ryan Christie says the bond between the group will help get them over the line.

Scotland weren’t at their best in the Faroes, but managed to dig in and grab a late winner through Lyndon Dykes.

It means that a victory in Moldova next month would secure second spot in Group F and a possible pathway to Qatar 2022.

Gilmour said: “Throughout the squad there is loads of trust. The manager puts it on the players and we need to go out and perform.

“Three points was the most important thing.

“We knew that it was going to be tough on the astroturf surface.

“We never played anywhere near our best but the three points are all that matters.”

The Faroe Islands gave Scotland a scare and Gilmour believes they are a decent side.

The Norwich loanee admitted: “It was difficult. They made it difficult for us to get the ball down, play and create more chances.

“We never started anywhere near as good as we should have in the first half. We then tried to get the ball down and play in the second half and we managed to find the spaces and make opportunities.”

Christie, meanwhile, is suspended for Moldova, but the playmaker says the tightness of the group will ensure progression.

He explained: “We knew this camp was two massive games and we managed to get over the line with six points which was always the main aim.

“The next one is Moldova and another massive game. We just build confidence.

“It’s nice these last two camps and the next one coming up are so close together because you feel as though you are not away from each other for too long and you can keep that momentum going. It’s what we will be looking to do.”

Christie praised the spirit of the squad and added: “It was a sticky game but the three points was the most important thing.

“The boys were buzzing at the end. At half-time, we were all a bit frustrated at the way the game had gone and felt we had wasted a half.

“The way we came out in the second half, we upped the tempo. Around 10 or 15 minutes to go, you saw a few of their players go down with cramp, so we knew they would tire.

“Credit to the boys for raising the tempo and standard of the game.”
