Momentum to carry us all the way says Collins

- MICHAEL BAILLIE

FORMER Scotland star John Collins reckons the togetherness and character in Steve Clarke’s squad has carried them to the brink of the World Cup play-offs.

And Collins has backed them to get the win in Moldova next month to seal their play-off spot.

He said: “We should go there and get the three points and into the playoffs. Fingers crossed.

“They have got that momentum now, there’s a feelgood factor within the squad. You can see there’s a great attitude and togetherness and that is what’s getting them through.

“Played poorly but they came through once again. It’s always good when you finish games well.”

Collins admits Scotland’s defending will have been a cause for concern for Clarke. But he was delighted they managed to get that vital win – just as they did against Israel on Saturday.

Collins, a pundit for ITV Sport, added: “Massive, six points. The first half was terrible, that’s the only way to describe it. We rode our luck but, like the weekend, in the second half we picked it up and probably deserved to win in the end.

“But it was worrying defensively from Stevie’s point of view and he will be disappointed with the number of chances we let them create.

“It’s never easy when you go to these places, it’s astroturf but we should still be playing better than we did in the first half.

“The second half we pushed up, we pressed, we never let them build, have any possession of the ball.

“We got the ball wide, got good crosses into the box and it was no surprise when the goal came from a good cross.”
