Coisty: Fans shouldn’t have been in the dark

- BY CHRIS DOYLE

ALLY McCOIST has accused Steven Gerrard of lacking manners by keeping Rangers fans in the dark before being appointed Aston Villa boss.

The former Liverpool star left Ibrox yesterday as he was named Dean Smith’s successor following his sacking earlier this week.

Gerrard’s decision took Rangers fans by surprise after he said he was “settled and happy” last month.

And former Light Blues manager McCoist has criticised the new Villa manager for keeping supporters in the dark.

Speaking on talkSPORT just before Gerrard’s switch was confirmed, he said : “I think we’ve reached the stage where everybody, fans of both clubs, deserve a wee bit of notice now.

“Villa fans and the Rangers fans deserve maybe a quote from Aston Villa, a quote from Rangers, and indeed a quote from

Steven. It’s just manners.”

It’s not just fans who were none the wiser, the Rangers dressing room did not receive any direct contact from Gerrard about his departure.

The players were told to expect an announcement at 10am on Thursday morning but were not notified by Gerrard himself.

But McCoist thinks Gerrard will be a huge success in the Midlands.

He added: “He’s got the respect because of what he did as a player and what he did last year at Rangers. I don’t care what anybody says, to go through that league campaign undefeated was a great achievement.”

Former Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has also given his seal of approval.

He said: “For Gerrard it’s the perfect club. It’ll be a shame for Rangers, he did an outstanding job there.”
