Gers must keep flying club class

- BY MATTHEW FULTON

KENNY MILLER admits Steven Gerrard’s departure has come as a shock but insists nobody is bigger than Rangers.

The former Gers and Scotland striker believes fans at Ibrox will be stunned by his departure.

Miller said: “I’m a bit shocked – it has moved pretty quickly.

“He had a link with Newcastle last month and it was dealt with over time but this has come very quickly indeed.

“Aston Villa have moved swiftly and it leaves Rangers reeling a bit and searching for his replacement now.

“There’s an element of shock among all the Rangers fans.

“After everything that has been achieved over the last three-and-a-half years with the building, some fantastic European campaigns and the 55th title, everybody wanted to see Steven build on that.

“To add a cup, go on and win the league this year and get that Champions League football.

“So there is a bit of shock but in football players move on, managers move on and no one is bigger than the club.

“Rangers need to regroup and find a replacement quickly because there are some big fixtures coming up.”

Despite claims Gerrard only enjoyed limited success, Miller believes the team is in a better place after his stint as boss.

He said: “There’s no doubt it’s been a success. If you look at the cup competitions last year and losing in the manner they did, three games lost over the course of the season and they were three cup games.

“They’ll look back on that as a missed opportunity but nothing can take away from the fact it was a huge success last year.

“You’re always judged at Rangers on trophies. It’s been a success not just in terms of winning the league but also the squad that’s been built. There are so many assets and they can dominate for a number of years.”
