at Watford on Saturday, which stretched their dismal run to just four points from 21.

Former Old Trafford striker Solskajer was dismissed after a meeting with executive vicechairman Ed Woodward, with Michael Carrick taking charge for the next few games – starting tomorrow away to Villarreal in the Champions League.

And Pochettino, ironically, will be in Manchester this week as his PSG side take on United’s rivals City in the Champions League on Wednesday.

United are looking to appoint an interim boss to take over from Carrick until the end of the season, with their former defender Laurent Blanc – currently coaching in Qatar – one of those in the frame.

Former Celtic and current Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers, former Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane and Ajax coach Erik Ten Hag are all on United’s shortlist to replace Solskjaer permanently.

But former Spurs boss Pochettino, in charge of PSG, is understood to be the man United want to appoint on a permanent basis next summer. Sir Alex Ferguson has been a long-time admirer of Pochettino and has previously tried to lure him to Old Trafford but it seems United are finally set to land the Argentine.

United legend Gary Neville gave his seal of approval and said: “He’s always been a stand-out candidate and the only name I’ve mentioned as someone I thought really suited Manchester United in terms of core principles and values.”

Solskjaer was sacked a month shy of his three-year anniversary in charge and was close to tears following his dismissal but left his former players with a inspirational final message.

The Norwegian said: “As I’ve said to them this morning, trust yourselves, you know we’re better than this.

“We’ve not been able to show it but go out, chest out, enjoy being a Manchester United player, Champions League, on the biggest stage.

“I’m going to leave by the front door, because I think everyone knows I’ve given everything for this club.”
