Mitch: We’ve sent message to our rivals

-

MITCH MEGGINSON bagged his fourth goal in as many games to send Cove top of the table and he reckons toppling Airdrie sends a message to the rest of the division.

The Wee Rangers skipper popped up 11 minutes from time to head Blair Yule’s cross in off the post, before sub Fraser Fyvie clinched the points three minutes later.

It helped Cove leapfrog Airdrie into top spot and with just five points separating the top four, the striker believes their win on the road against in-form Diamonds – who had won five of their last six games – shows they will be determined to stay at the summit.

Megginson said: “I think it sends a message in terms of our performance and we can go away to difficult teams.

“They’ve been on a great run of form and we’ve shown we can mix it with the best. Everyone knows our qualities throughout the side. Our aim is to stay there as long as possible.

“To be there now is a great achievement but we have still got heaps of games to go, so we’ll take it one game at a time.”

On his goal, which took his tally to 11 for the season, he added: “It was good to get a wee flick on it. I’m not known for my heading so it was nice to see it find the back of the net.

“I’ve found a bit of good form and I’m feeling good.

“The team is working hard. We’ve changed the shape and it’s suiting us from a defensive and attacking point of view.”

Airdrie did have chances before the late drama, with the best falling to Dylan Easton in the second half when Cove keeper Stuart McKenzie gifted him the ball but the stopper redeemed himself with a good save.

Diamonds boss Ian Murray said: “We were a bit tentative all over the park, with and without the ball, but the manner we lost the goals is the real frustration.”

Elsewhere, Montrose moved up to third after Cammy Ballantyne scored the only goal at Falkirk while Dumbarton won 2-1 at Alloa.

Clyde struck three times in 21 second-half minutes as they came from behind to beat East Fife 3-1. Ross Cunningham hit a double.

Peterhead also came from a goal down to beat Queen’s Park 2-1.
