LEWIS McCANN admits he couldn’t contain himself after his first Dunfermline goal as the John Hughes era began with a bang.

Not feeling fulfilled, the forward – who made his debut almost three-and-ahalf years ago – went on to score his second after a Ryan Dow header.

Having grabbed a first league win the previous weekend with their new boss watching from the stand, their maiden victory at East End Park with Yogi in the dugout lifted them off bottom and up to sixth.

McCann, who powered home a headed first then swept in Aaron Comrie’s cross, said: “It has been a long time coming.

“But the scenes after the first goal were just way too much – I got way too excited! Hopefully there are more to come.

“Just seeing the ball going in, it is such a relief to score and it lifts such a weight off my shoulders.

“Hopefully I can play

with a bit more confidence, with a bit more freedom. It was a really good afternoon – especially in the second half. We took more control and barely gave the ball away. We’ve set a standard for ourselves now, it is just about improving it and moving on to get more wins.

“It’s been a long time coming, especially at home. The boys are buzzing. We won’t get carried away.”

Seventh-placed Ayr are six games without a win and just a point off bottom.

Boss Jim Duffy said: “Ultimately football is about confidence and mentality. You saw that with Dunfermline. They had confidence on the back of the Inverness win and a few weeks ago that wasn’t there.

“Football can change and you’ve got to keep working to try to change it round. That’s the challenge I have – to get the mix right.”
