Tait keen to experience the joy of six

ST MIRREN v ROSS COUNTY

- BY ANDY NEWPORT

RICHARD TAIT says St Mirren have to decide which route to take as they approach a Premiership crossroads.

Jim Goodwin’s Buddies sit just two points outside the top six as they prepare to host Ross County tonight.

Defeat to the basement boys would leave Saints just three points above the dropzone and facing the prospect of a scrap for survival.

Tait knows which direction he wants to be going in and said: “We want to be pushing to get into that top six but it’s just as important to get the win to open up some distance on the teams below us – and stop us looking over our shoulders.

“That makes it pretty important that we get the three points and we’ll be doing our utmost to do that.

“It would stop us getting dragged into that mix. It’s pretty tight, either way. Hopefully we’re looking up the way come Thursday.”

The Buddies have ambitions of breaking into the top six but it was a bridge too far last term, agonisingly missing out after they lost a lastminute goal to Hamilton.

Tait reckons the best way to avoid a repeat of that late heartache is to make an early assault on the upper reaches of the table.

He said: “The aim is to be in that top six and see where you can go once you’re established in there.

“A run of four or five good results can really move you up the table.

“No one around us has really managed to do that in this period but there’s a big opportunity over the Christmas period to get a few wins – and that will take us right up the table. That has to be our aim.

“Obviously we’ve got a good opportunity to win on Wednesday and put a lot of points between us and Ross County. That’s what we want to do.”
