Mum in blast at twisted posts that say her adorable Down’s tot shouldn’t have been born
A MUM has hit out at vile trolls who told her that her daughter with Down’s syndrome shouldn’t have been born.
Shannon Wemyss, who is also a carer for two-year-old Gracey, said she had been bombarded with horrific messages about her daughter telling her she should have been aborted.
The 25-year-old, who is now pregnant with a second child, said she “wouldn’t change a thing” about Gracey as she hit out at the anonymous accounts which appear to have been used just to abuse her family.
Shannon, who lives in Inverness with Gracey and husband Mikey, said news of her second child on the way online had provoked teams of trolls to message and comment on her social media accounts.
She said: “We shared a photo of Gracey on my Instagram and Facebook pages saying she was going to have a little brother soon and that’s when this all started.
“We were getting quite excited that it was getting a lot more attention than normal, reaching more than six million people and getting 100,000 likes.
“But as time went on we started to receive a lot more bad messages than good.
“It’s not something that’s ever happened to us before, we have always had a lot of positive comments so this has come as a real shock.
“It’s not even real accounts that are giving the abuse – it’s random accounts which have just been made with no followers or friends which makes it worse.
“You know it’s just these people and that’s all they do in a day is just message people such horrible things.”
Shannon added that the couple had initially been reporting the accounts but the determined trolls often just made new ones.
She said: “It’s both messages and comments and I’ve turned the comments off on Instagram now because it was just every day and I couldn’t keep up with deleting them.
“I didn’t want to wake up every morning and read such nasty things about my daughter.
“I suppose they must just be completely uneducated about what having a child with special needs is like.
“Most of the things they are saying are completely wrong.
“One, for example, said yesterday that Gracey should be taken away from us because it’s cruel that we have brought her into the world knowing what she has.
“They are saying it is abusive to Gracey that we went ahead with the pregnancy knowing she was going to be born with Down’s and that she doesn’t deserve to be here.
“It’s hard to believe anyone would even think that never mind say it. Mikey wanted to message them back but we decided there was just no point because that’s what they want.” Despite their ordeal, the family have been inundated with support from the community. Shannon said they would not change a thing about Gracey. She added: “Since Gracey came along she’s just been amazing and her syndrome is not something we even think about every day.” On Facebook, Shannon wrote: “Thank you for all the lovely messages/ comments. It definitely outweighs the bad.”
