‘I’m confused. Ross says it wasn’t a penalty but if it had happened at the other end then he’d have claimed it’

look happy? No, but he shouldn’t make silly challenges in the box.”

John Bruce emailed: “Rangers showed the sign of champions when they went to Easter Road, didn’t play at their best – but came away with all three points. A stonewall penalty was all that separated the teams but Hibs never looked like winning the match.”

Kevin Kean, Inchinnan, emailed: “Is Porteous on an Ibrox pre-contract or what? Every season it’s all or any of an OG, red card or causes a penalty – he’s worth about six points to Rangers per campaign.”

But Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “Yet again the referee comes in to save Rangers and it’s now on the verge of laughable. There’s no doubt every other team would be shouting for a penalty in that situation but how many other teams would get it?”

Daniel Kelly emailed: “More proof we need VAR. Rangers’ penalty was never a penalty. Porteous pulled his left leg and there was no contact. Ryan Kent’s momentum carried him into Porteous’ right standing leg. No penalty and no dive and probably no fault with the referee.”

Darren Macfarlane, Edinburgh, emailed: “Another shocking decision in Scottish football? How can anyone take Scottish football seriously?

“Beaton should never be allowed to referee again after that decision against Hibs. Not only an outrageous dive but a broken run up when the penalty was taken. Another gift when Rangers needed one.”

Finally, Dundee United fan Ronnie Swan, Lochee, isn’t happy. He said: “Just when you think United have turned a corner, suddenly the team is in free-fall.

“OK, they’ve got injuries but the replacements and so-called young guns aren’t very good and they’re lucky to have stolen a good few points already. One good performance at Hibs. The rest? Rubbish.”
