JOHN POTTER insists Ryan Porteous has taken his game to another level with Hibs this term – and is backing him to shrug off his latest controversy.

The defender’s never far from the headlines in games against Rangers and was involved in Wednesday night’s pivotal moment once more.

Sent-off against the Ibrox men earlier in the season, he followed that with a cheeky post-match dig at departed boss Steven Gerrard in the wake of the Premier Sports Cup win over the Light Blues.

This time, the 22-yearold was less than ‘happy’ as he was penalised for a trip in the box on Ryan Kent that allowed Kemar Roofe to clinch three points.

Public enemy No.1 as far as the visiting fans are concerned, they lapped up Porteous being at the heart of their success.

But Potter, a defensive mentor to the youngster since taking over as Jack Ross’ assistant two years ago, is adamant the Scotland squad member will brush off the latest flashpoint for the visit of Motherwell today.

He said: “You let him get on with it. He’s a strong boy, he’s pretty determined. He was brilliant the other night, really good.

“There was an incident that could have gone either way. And it’s disappointing.

“But Ryan’s actual performance was outstanding. He’ll be fine to go again against Motherwell.

“Do I think he has taken his game to another level? I do. He was good last season and was part of a good defence.

“Individually he’s picked up this season. We would still like to keep more clean sheets and we can be better as a unit defensively.

“But, individually, Ryan has been very good.”

Josh Campbell is pinching himself at signing a new long-term deal at Hibs.

Campbell, 21, is enjoying an extended run in the team after impressing in the Premier Sports Cup semi-final triumph.

After committing himself to Hibs until 2025 earlier this week, Campbell said: “I expected to break into the first team when I was a bit younger but everyone breaks through at different ages. I’m just happy it has happened now.

“The gaffer’s put his trust in me and my confidence is sky high right now.”
