Just being able to play as good as trip to Ibrox

- BY NEIL ROBERTSON

LIAM FONTAINE admits he relishes every minute he spends training as much as huge games against Rangers at Ibrox.

The veteran Dundee defender turns 36 next month but is adamant he still has plenty to offer and is at the peak of fitness.

Fontaine knows how quickly that can change. The ex-Bristol City, Hibs and Ross County defender has suffered serious injuries in the past so is determined to savour each time he pulls on his boots.

He said: “You get a lot of clubs these days who focus on using younger players. But us older ones can still do it. You know yourself as a player if you’re past it.

“I don’t feel anywhere near past it. I feel I’m still as fit as anything and my body is in good condition.

“But I appreciate it every time I take the field in a training session because there are lads I played with of my age who had to stop years ago.

“I’ve had my fair share of injuries throughout my career, including a couple of bad ones, so I just appreciate every minute I’m out there.”

Dundee struggled to find their feet on their return to the Premiership but are now up to ninth after winning their last two games. Fontaine knows just how difficult it will be to keep that good run going at Ibrox but insists Dundee can produce a shock if the players all retain their inner belief.

He added: “We’re under no illusions that it’s going to be tough. When we played them at Dens they won 1-0 but I thought it was quite close.

“We have to bring the same attitude we had that day to Ibrox.

“We’re on a good minirun at the moment so there’s no saying we can’t go there and get a result. We just have to believe.”
