Glad they Legged it to aid Griff

- Andy Newport

ADAM LEGZDINS reckons the Leigh Griffiths hoo-ha was overblown at Ibrox.

But the Dens Park keeper insists the spirit his teammates showed in racing to back him up cannot be understated.

On-loan Celt Griffiths found himself the target of Ibrox jeers as he replaced Charlie Adam.

And the taunting went up a notch when the striker narrowly avoided a red card for fouls on Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey in quick succession.

Legzdins was delighted to see how Dundee’s players reacted when Griffiths was surrounded by angry Rangers stars.

He said: “Yeah, we back each other, we’re going into battle at the end of the day.

“There was a lot of hoo-ha over nothing, really. There were fouls like that all day and suddenly that one was a big thing.

“But as players we back each other and get on with it. I think playing and fighting the way we are, over the course of the season, I’ll take that.”

Gers took the lead when a Joe Aribo strike was deflected off Liam Fontaine while Ryan Sweeney’s own goal gave them a second.

Despite Alfredo Morelos notching a third, Legzdins’ heroics prevented a bigger drubbing for the Dens men.

The former Birmingham keeper said: “When you come to a place like this you need your keeper to make some saves. That’s my job so it was nice to help the team out.

“It’s just frustrating for us as the goals were definitely avoidable.

“What was it, two own goals? I’d say nine times out of 10 Sweens clears his one and Fonts clears his one.

“It was their honesty that was trying to get the ball out of the net. I’ll take that, our defenders putting their bodies on the line.”
