Level best not enough for Ton boss

- Alison McConnell

AS the dust settled on an entertaining game, Morton were on the hunt for a new manager.

Ayr remain slightly better off in seventh place but with just one point between the sides, there is hardly room for comfort for Jim Duffy’s side.

Morton are saved from the bottom only because of their goal difference.

The game was a decent watch but highlighted the defensive deficiencies of both sides, with Duffy particularly irked at the manner in which his side fought back and then allowed all three points to slip from their grasp.

Gozie Ugwu had headed Morton in front midway through the first half but the Ayr substitutes came on to turn the game with both Steven Bradley and Tomi Adeloye finding the net within four minutes.

As angry supporters made their feelings known, there was a late leveller when Ugwu got the hosts back onto level terms. It saved them from propping up the table but was not enough to save Gus MacPherson.

Ayr boss Duffy said: “In the first half we didn’t take part but we get ourselves in the situation where we should have won the game and then we go and give away a really poor goal.

“That was bitterly disappointing because we looked comfortable and it was just one ball into the box we didn’t defend.

“Defensively we let ourselves down. They were two poor, poor goals to lose. It is a lapse of concentration and we need to do the basics better.

“If you offered us a draw before coming here we would have taken it – but the manner in which we lost the late goal makes it difficult to appreciate that.”
