Offensive comment was posted online

A MAN has admitted making racist comments online after football boss Alex Dyer was sacked by Kilmarnock.

Robert Wilson wrote, “Thank f**k, back to the jungle” on Facebook after it emerged the Englishman had left Rugby Park.

Wilson, 44, appeared in the dock at Ayr Sheriff Court yesterday.

He pled guilty to a charge of sending a message that was “grossly offensive or of an indecent, obscene or menacing character”, in breach of Section 127(1)(a) of the Communications Act 2003.

Prosecutor Emma Gilliland told Sheriff Desmond Leslie the offence took place in January. She said: “It was regarding the sacking of Kilmarnock manager Alex Dyer. It said, ‘Thank f***, back to the jungle” and was posted on the STV Facebook page.”

Defence solicitor Robert Logan said Wilson, of Kilmarnock, had been having “a number of online conversations while drinking” and had been discussing the Londonborn former defender. He added: “He was speaking to a friend of his who is a supporter of Kilmarnock.

“He thought he was sending the message to his friend but it appears it was sent publicly.

“It was not directed at Mr Dyer, but in the context of a discussion about a man who is, plainly, black, who had been sacked, there is no other way to interpret it as being of a racist nature.”

The lawyer said Wilson would be able to pay a fine but Sheriff Leslie instead called for background reports before passing sentence.

He added: “This is the 21st century and this behaviour is totally unacceptable.”

Wilson will be sentenced in the new year.
