Liam eager to be a first responder

- BY CRAIG SWAN

LIAM GORDON is adamant St Johnstone’s rattled stars will reflect on and ultimately recover from the nightmare run that has upset boss Callum Davidson.

And the McDiarmid Park skipper has welcomed the manager’s vow to inject new blood into the group during a busy January transfer window.

Gordon and his shellshocked squad entered the shutdown with a rebuke ringing in their ears.

Davidson urged some members of the squad to have a look at themselves after Celtic’s 3-1 Boxing Day win in Perth made it eight successive defeats.

The double-winning gaffer has been promised backing next month to bolster the troops and is ready to make changes.

Gordon said: “That’s outwith my control, I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes.

“Certainly it would benefit the squad as a whole to have some fresh faces in, competition for us all. If that’s what happens, we’ll welcome it.

“We’ll use this as a time to step away, reflect on what has been a disappointing first half of the season and give us time to regroup. Then we’ll come back refreshed and eager to get ourselves up the table.”

Gordon wants to play his part in an upturn with the club propping up the pile.

He said: “Not just as a captain, that’s my role as a player and a team-mate. We’ve got numerous people in the dressing room who can have that effect as well.

“It doesn’t just come from me and it can’t just come from me. It has to come from everyone.

“If we start getting everyone singing from the same hymn sheet, we’ll be fine.

“We’re bottom of the table and the club hasn’t faced this level of disappointment in a long time, especially coming off the back of last season.

“It will certainly test the character of the squad. I still absolutely back us as a group – players and managers – to get us out of the situation we’re in. We’re up for the fight.”
