Influencer Jamie rakes in £1.6m from make-up tips

- STUART MacDONALD

POSTING make-up videos online has led to influencer Jamie Genevieve raking in a fortune worth more than £1.6million. The 28-year-old has built up a huge following for her tutorials, in which she shares tricks to achieve her signature look. Jamie was working on a beauty counter at Debenhams in Glasgow when she started posting on Instagram and YouTube, and brands soon got in touch asking her to plug their products. The make-up artist now has more than 1.4million followers and last year launched her make-up range called Vieve. Latest accounts for Vieve show that it has total assets of £1,472,628, which includes stock, cash held in a bank account and money owed by debtors. After paying off creditors, the firm has been valued at £1,229,059, according to the accounts which cover the 12-month period up to December 31, 2020. Her second firm, Jamie Genevieve Limited, which channels income from her work as a social media influencer, has assets of more than £530,000.

The accounts show it owes creditors almost £140,000 within a year and has shareholder funds of £390,712.

Jamie, originally from Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, posts a weekly social media video with the help of husband Jack, who works with her, editing, filming and taking pictures.

Cameras also followed her for two documentaries – Jamie Genevieve Unfiltered and Jamie Genevieve: Great Indoors – which were shown on the BBC Scotland channel.

Speaking previously about her success, she said: “I technically have more followers than the population of Glasgow.

“Whenever I’m out the house, I’m guaranteed to bump into a few people who know who we are and what we do. I never started doing this for millions of followers – not that I don’t want them. But I’m delighted it all happened naturally.

“I just wanted to do my make-up stuff and have a good time, then it turned into a job and something a bit more than that.”

Earlier this month, an Instagram post by Jamie was banned after she failed to make clear it was an advert.

She posted a picture featuring an image of several make-up products branded with the name of her firm.

The Advertising Standards Authority launched a probe after two complainants questioned whether the post was obviously identifiable as a marketing communication.

Genevieve’s representatives told the watchdog they believed the post did not qualify as an advert because it was placed on her personal Instagram account without remuneration and without editorial control by a third party.

But the ASA ruled the post must not appear again in the form complained about.
