Novak still has hopes of going all way to Oz

-

NOVAK DJOKOVIC still hopes to play in the Australian Open says fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic.

The world No.1 pulled out of the ATP Cup that begins tomorrow. But there remains no confirmation over whether he’ll defend his title next month.

All players must be vaccinated against Covid or have a medical exemption.

Djokovic has refused to say whether or not he is vaccinated and previously voiced vaccine scepticism.

But Lajovic said: “He just said he’s not coming to the ATP and trying to get to the Australian Open.”

Andy Murray missed the tournament last year after a bout of the virus but has been pictured practising at Melbourne Park. BOXING: Tyson Fury has urged Deontay Wilder not to retire – and has backed him to beat Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk.

The American is considering quitting after suffering back-to-back defeats to the Gypsy King.

Wilder, 36, was knocked out by the Brit in the 11th round of their October clash.

But WBC champion Fury said: “I’d like to see him fight on because he has a lot to give to the sport. I still think he’s the second best heavyweight out there.” ICE HOCKEY: Fife Flyers’ Challenge Cup quarterfinal clash with Sheffield Steelers is the latest Elite League postponement due to rising Covid numbers. Glasgow Clan’s game in Fife on January 2 is also off.

But Dundee Stars – sidelined for almost three weeks – are in Belfast to face the Giants today. CURLING: World champions Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat finished third at the Gothenburg Mixed Doubles Cup in Sweden.

The Edinburgh duo beat Finland’s Oona and Aku Kauste 7-4 in the quarters but lost 7-5 in the semis to Norwegians Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten. Dodds and Mouat then beat Swiss pair Jenny Perret and Martin Rios 7-3 in the bronze play-off.
