Greegsy is now irreplaceable at Gers but with the form that he’s in, why wou ld h e w a n t to retire?

view. It’ll probably be more the mental side. Does he want to continuously keep doing it?

“I think he could do no problem, but it might be, does he want to continue? Does he want to take some time away and spend more time with his family? Or does he want to continue until his body says no?

“I think he probably could play on for another two or three seasons if he wants to.

“Looking at the form he is in and has been since he went back to Rangers, probably one of the best signings they have in years, he could play on.

“You watch Allan. I was at the Livingston game a few weeks ago and I saw him live. The determination and the passion he shows during a game is still there. He was still going crazy at things and that proves how much he loves the game and that he’s a winner.

“That is one of his biggest attributes and would have been drummed into him from managers such as Walter Smith. The demands of winning. That’s why he might continue. Because he’s still got that passion. You can see it when he plays.”

Earlier in the season, McGregor was in and out of the team with Steven Gerrard pitching Jon McLaughlin into the action. But van Bronckhorst has stuck solely with the more experienced No.1 and has been repaid handsomely.

Bell said: “Last season, Rangers didn’t concede many goals and this season there have been more. Not due to any of Allan’s fault. They’ve had injuries and changes in the backline this season. It’s not always been the same personnel.

“Six clean sheets will probably go unnoticed because of the form Allan’s in. It’s expected of him. That’s how good he’s been and the standards he’s set.”

As well as on the pitch, Bell believes McGregor’s influence around Auchenhowie will be huge.

The keeper will have nous to pass onto younger colleagues and Bell should know given he was in exactly the right spot to receive advice when part of the international scene alongside the Rangers ace and Craig Gordon, who turns 39 tomorrow.

Bell said: “He’s got so many good attributes. Allan’s a great guy to have around a training ground. It’s not just his ability and his experience, but it’s his characteristics as well.

“He’s been there, done it and seen it all. He’s got all the knowledge to pass to the younger kids.

“When I got the opportunity to go away with Scotland in the camps with Greegsy and Craig, they were the guys you wanted to listen to and learn from. It was great experience.

“Allan is a bubbly guy, someone I really liked being around. I enjoyed his company and you need to learn off the guys who have been there and done it.

“They can pass on valuable experience to younger players.”
