Hughes’ Pars make their point but boss says they were worth three

-

JOHN HUGHES made a point on his return to old club Raith Rovers but insists Dunfermline deserved all three.

Yogi saw his side move a point clear of Morton at the bottom of the table but with Lewis McCann spurning the game’s best chance in the first half and going close with a second-half header, the Pars boss was adamant his side did enough to take all three points.

Matty Todd also had two halfchances either side of the break and Hughes said: “I feel we had the better chances in the game, especially in the first half, and I was really disappointed not to go in ahead at half-time.

“But it was two teams who were evenly matched up and we ran out of steam in the last 20 minutes because we’d put a lot of work in.

“Toddy might have had a couple of goals, McCann might have had a goal so we had the better chances.

“But I’m really proud of my boys. We were playing against a right good Raith Rovers team who will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.”

Hughes has revealed Kai Kennedy will now return to Rangers following a lack of gametime with the Pars this season.

He said: “I don’t think we’ll see Kai again, I think Rangers have done a recall and he’ll go back there. It would have been nice if he had been here, he might have just given us a nice going away present.”

After back-to-back defeats Raith have now gone three games without a victory but are still within touching distance of the top of the Championship.

This was no classic and Rovers were well short of the form they showed earlier in the campaign.

In the 20th minute an Ethan Ross free-kick picked out Tom Lang but the defender got his header all wrong and it bounced wide.

Ross whipped a free-kick up and over the wall from 25 yards out late on and had the Raith fans off their seats but the net rippled on the wrong side as it curled just over the bar and neither side could break the deadlock as time ticked away.

Rovers John boss John McGlynn said: “It was frustrating. It was a dour, drab, dull derby. There weren’t an awful lot of chances and it was lacking in quality.

“We can play better than that but it was a clean sheet and that’s really all we can take from it.”
