Health board: Walk like a penguin to avoid snow fall

-

A SCoTS health board is urging people to walk like a penguin to keep safe.

As snow fell yesterday over large parts of the country, NHS Greater Glasgow & Clyde encouraged peiple to “walk like penguins to avoid slips and trips in the snow and on ice this weekend”.

It said it is a safer way to get about in the cold weather as it could help keep you stable and minimise the risk of losing balance or slipping.

The call comes as A&Es face unprecedented pressure this winter due to Covid-19 and other factors which means A&Es are operating at well over normal capacity.

Top tips to walk like a penguin: •Bend slightly and keep your knees loose •Point your feet out slightly •Extend your arms at your sides •Walk flat-footed, taking short steps •Keep your centre of gravity over your feet

But the health board said in the event of a slip, trip or fall which requires medical attention, people should not to go straight to A&E but instead phone 111 for advice and to access a Minor Injuries Unit. by PAUL DRURY reporters@dailyrecord.co.uk

FRIDAY flurries sparked traffic chaos yesterday as thousands of motorists were caught out by overnight snowfall.

Cars and lorries became stuck on the M8 motorway at locations in Glasgow, Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire.

It was even freezing in Furnace, with Traffic Scotland tweeting a picture of a plough trying to clear the road in the Argyllshire village.

The Met Office had predicted that the western half of Scotland was in line for snow showers, with a yellow “be aware” warning period in place from 8pm on Thursday until noon yesterday.

Yet chaos on the carriageways began
