Mitch putts trip on hold for shot at glory

-

MITCH MEGGINSON will swap a jolly in sunny Portugal for a joust at chilly Broadwood today – and says his old man wouldn’t have stood for anything else.

The 29-year-old will look to add to his 16-goal haul for the season when league leaders Cove face Clyde having won seven on the bounce.

Only Megginson and dad Mike had another date pencilled in the diary this past week, one in the Titleist Better-ball Pairs Grand Final in Vale do Lobo in the Algarve.

The golfing pair had bagged a spot going through the Scottish regional final last year. But with Paul Hartley’s men five points clear at the top as they bid to clinch a third promotion in four years, there was no chance of their talisman hopping on a flight.

Albeit the fact Megginson’s father is a Cove legend with 147 goals over a 13-year spell made letting down his doubles partner a little easier.

Megginson said: “My mum took my ticket, they are over there right now.

“That’s the final but I always knew the timing was going to be difficult with the football side of things. For me, football is No.1 – I will just need to do it again once I retire!

“My mum is not allowed to play in the competition but she is allowed to play along with him so my dad is just by himself. He is playing against doubles so I don’t think he will have any hope of winning it.

“At the end of the day you get a week’s trip to Portugal golfing, it is not a bad way to go in January. It was him telling me that I couldn’t go, that’s how dedicated to Cove he is!”

Clyde haven’t lost in the league since October and have won away to Alloa and Falkirk since their Scottish Cup exit at the hands of Clydebank.

It was a shock to the system frontman Rob Jones reckons may have acted as a catalyst as they bear down on the play-off places, sitting four points off Queen’s Park.

He said: “It was a really disappointing result. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise in the sense it did give us that jolt because since then we have really kicked on and started to play together and play a lot better.”
