SCARLETT’S SWEETEST

-

(Matthew McConaughey) and friends as they set out to pitch an original show to hotelier Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale), a white wolf with an enormous arena to fill and nothing to draw in the crowds. Their idea, which was meant as a joke, lands them huge performances from emo gorilla Johnny (Taron Egerton), porcupine pop star Ash, porcine pair Rosita (Reese Witherspoon) and Gunter (Nick Kroll) – joined by U2 megastar Bono as a rocker they must lure from retirement for the big night. Scarlett loves the Sing franchise as it’s something her seven-year-old daughter Rose can watch and enjoy. She certainly wouldn’t let her watch her Scottish sci-fi horror Under The Skin though. Scarlett laughed: “This is probably one of the only films I can actually show my daughter. She is definitely not watching Under The Skin. “She’s grown up with these films the same way I grew up with like The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast.” The first time we heard Scarlett sing was The Pretenders’ Brass in Pocket in Sophia

Coppola’s 2003 film Lost in Translation.

In 2006, she sang Summertime on benefit album Unexpected Dreams – Songs From the Stars.

The next year, she surprised fans with that Coachella performance with The Jesus and Mary Chain at Coachella. The song had been heard at the end of Lost in Translation.

Since then Scarlett has released two albums. Her debut Anywhere I Lay My Head in 2008 had David Bowie as a backing singer on two tracks.

She also sang Trust in Me for The Jungle Book Soundtrack in 2016.

For Sing 2 it was Scarlett who convinced U2 to take part. While Bono wanted to do it and had a part, he held a band meeting with the others to make sure they were OK with it.

Bono shared a recording of Scarlett singing Stuck in a Moment You Can’t Get Out Of and got the full backing of the band.

He said: “I wasn’t surprised she could pull it off. But the band were. I think it stunned them all. I just had to put that scene on: ‘OK? Your songs are in goodhands.’”

Sing 2 will be in cinemas from January 28.

In what world would I ever duet with Bono? Maybe in my 13-year-old fantasy SCARLETT JOHANSSON ON SINGING WITH HER MUSICAL IDOL
