Callum: Super kids have kept us in the race

-

CALLUM TAPPING reckons Edinburgh’s kids deserve enormous credit for keeping City in the promotion race.

Gary Naysmith’s side face leaders Kelty Hearts today outside the play-off places on goal difference but with a game in hand over fourth-placed Stenhousemuir.

At 28, ex-Hearts midfielder Tapping is one of the more experienced at a club that named as few as three outfield subs in one game last month in a season ravaged by injuries and Covid.

In the second half of City’s 2-1 win at Cowdenbeath three days before Christmas, their oldest player on the pitch was 23.

Tapping said: “It’s been tough. At times we’ve had nine, 10 players out who, if you look at the start of the year, probably started the first game of the season for us.

“And they’ve been out as a group maybe four, five six games in a row. To be still in the position we’re in, it’s good, going into the second half of the season.

“Most importantly, it shows how good the club are run with the Under-20s who have come through, they’ve allowed us to pick up points and continue to keep fighting for that top four. It’s been a credit to the 20s, they’ve stepped up and been superb.”

Livingston loanee Harrison Clark made his Kelty debut last week, having seen fellow teen Connor Barron recalled by Aberdeen. And Robbie McNab reckons Barron’s success will let clubs higher up the pyramid know New Central Park is the perfect place for their top young talent.

The midfielder said: “Wee Connor was unbelievable. He’ll be missed.

“The way he has developed and has been called back, hopefully he is going to go and play in Aberdeen’s first team, speaks volumes.”
