Charlie’s out to spoil old Bhoys’ bash

- BY SCOTT BURNS

CHARLIE MULGREW wants European hopefuls Dundee United to step up and put his Bhoyhood club’s title-clinching party on hold.

Celtic could seal the Premiership trophy by taking a midweek point at Tannadice tomorrow night.

Mulgrew, 36, knows all eyes will be on his old club but he is adamant the game is just as important for United as they look to remain in the European places, especially after their lead was closed following their own weekend defeat at Ibrox.

Just three points separate United, Motherwell and Ross County with just two Europa Conference League spots up for grabs.

United, who are in the driving seat in fourth place, entertain Celtic tomorrow then take on rivals County in Dingwall at the weekend.

Mulgrew said: “The manager has been great in pushing us and trying to create a winning culture at the club. We’ve managed to pick up a few wins. There have been a lot of things we could have done better but we’re reasonably happy.

“However, the season is far from done and we want to finish really strongly. European football remains the aim. We finished in the top six and now we’re in this position, we want to push for fourth.

“It’s a totally different game; totally different occasion; totally different way that Celtic play. We need to be ready to step up.”

The veteran has rolled back the years in recent weeks, moving out of his defensive position and played in the midfield due to a lack of numbers in that area.

He said: “Whether I’m in midfield or at the back, I’ll just try to help them as much as I can – even if I’m really tired and it’s difficult to get the words out!

“There’s real talent in there. Archie Meekison is a right good player and already has great game knowledge. Dylan Levitt’s a very good footballer and Matty Cudjoe is another.”
