Couple up for cup as RIVALS

Lovebirds at loggerheads

A COUPLE who are planning their wedding have hit a hitch – as their favourite teams go head to head in today’s Scottish Cup final.

Battle lines have been drawn between Rangers supporter Jennifer Tait and her Hearts fan fiance Gary McDougall, who will be watching from opposite ends at Hampden today.

Prison officer Jennifer, 36, who met Gary at work, predicts her beloved Gers will come out on top with a 2-1 victory but admits the Jambos could give them “a run for our money”.

But Gary, 39, believes his team will win – by the exact same 2-1 scoreline.

Jennifer admitted the atmosphere at home has been tense in the build-up to the game.

She said: “The last few days have been torture because of Rangers losing on penalties to Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

“But it all came to a head on Thursday because it was the 10th anniversary of Hearts beating Hibs 5-1 in the cup final of 2012 and Gary is expecting them to lift it again. He has already planned his day on Sunday as Hearts have said they’re going to do an open-top bus tour if they win – but that’s not happening.

“We’re going to the game but will be at opposite ends. We’ll go to the pub together then put our strips on over our tops and go our separate ways.”

Gary said: “If Hearts don’t win, I’ll probably be pretty quiet and a wee bit sheepish but I’m sure I’ll be fine. I’m confident they are going to lift the cup.

“My dad and my brother are Hibs fans so I’ve always been a bit of a black sheep in the family. If Hearts lose, I’m going to get it from every angle but I’m prepared for that.”

Despite their football rivalry, the couple, from Chapelhall in Lanarkshire, are still looking forward to their wedding next April – but blue and maroon are banned at their nuptials to avoid any fall-out.
