We knew we needed lucky punch to win

-

LEEDS boss Jesse Marsch told his coaching staff to keep an eye on what was going on at Burnley and leave him to deal with his team – as his side pulled off their remarkable escape.

Leeds stayed up by three points in the end as Burnley dropped and Marsch said: “I told them just to watch the Burnley match and then we tried to get the information to the players.

“We wanted to win the game and get the lucky punch to seal our fate.

“Raphinha said to me after Brentford equalised that we needed to win in case Burnley scored – so we changed the formation. We did great.

“I was happy to see our players got after the game and were not afraid. The way we pushed at the end showed we wanted to keep our fate in our own hands.

“I always believed we could do this. I believed in these players and their resolve and their character. They deserved this.

“Yes I will have a drink tonight – I have already had some.”

Leeds went ahead when Bees keeper David Raya knocked his clearance straight to Raphinha then brought him down. The Brazilian picked himself up to slot home the penalty.

The leveller came when sub Josh Dasilva crossed and Sergi Canos nodded home. But then another twist. Canos was booked for taking his shirt off then a minute later picked up a second yellow for a foul.

At the same time, Kris Ajer limped off injured and Thomas Frank’s side had used all their subs.

Leeds were hanging on against nine men but then in the fourth minute of injury-time Jack Harrison’s shot was deflected in.

Bees boss Frank said: “The players are disappointed and angry in our dressing room. That shows how much we wanted to win.”
