Terror of girl, 4, as she is mauled by dog & left needing 60 stitches

- BY LYNN LOVE

A TERRIFIED little girl was left needing 60 stitches on her face after being savaged by a designer dog.

Four-year-old Harley Chatterton was in a family friend’s garden when the animal mauled her, causing multiple wounds. When she later saw herself in the mirror the traumatised tot asked her heartbroken mum: “What did I do wrong?” In shocking footage, the youngster can be seen standing beside the designer breed Jackador before the animal attacks her. Harley was heard screaming in pain as her gran tried to pull the dog off her. She suffered 13 injuries to her face including deep lacerations on her nose, mouth and lip. Doctors told Harley’s parents Caprice and Stephen that their daughter might be left with permanent scarring. Mum-of-three Caprice Finlay said: “Only time will tell if the scars will disappear. The surgeon gave us scarring cream but said they could be there forever.” The attack happened in Glasgow’s Baillieston area at about 4.30pm on May 14. Harley’s gran Janet Finlay witnessed the dog pounce from a balcony and ran to her rescue. She was left covered in blood as she tried to free the girl from the dog’s jaws. Caprice said she had feared the worst when she arrived shortly after the incident and saw her mum drenched in blood.

The 24-year-old added: “All I had been told was that Harley had been attacked by a dog.

“I didn’t know where or how bad it was. Me and Stephen got there quickly after it happened.

“The first thing I saw was my mum covered in blood. I was horrified, I knew it must have been serious.

“When I saw my little girl’s face, I was heartbroken. She was in so much pain and wouldn’t let anyone near her. “She was crying hysterically.” Emergency services were called to the scene and Harley was taken to the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Glasgow.

The following day she underwent plastic surgery to repair the wounds.

She was left with 60 stitches in 13 different places on her face after a two-hour operation.

Caprice said her daughter’s lip was so swollen that she could barely eat or drink for two days. She added: “It was so hard to watch because we couldn’t make her better.

“After she saw herself in the mirror, she kept asking why the dog did this to her. She said, ‘what did I do wrong mummy?’ My heart was broken for her.”

A 21-year-old woman is set to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date in connection with the incident.

Police said: “Officers were called to reports of a child having been bitten by a dog. Emergency services attended and the child was taken to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

“A 21-year-old woman was released on an undertaking to appear at Glasgow Sheriff Court at a later date. The dog was seized.”
