Braveheart’s return
Superstar says it’s good to be back after nearly three decades
BRAVEHEART star Mel Gibson has said it is good to be back in Scotland after almost 30 years.
Gibson, who played William Wallace in the hit movie, hasn’t returned since he attended the premiere at Stirling Castle in 1995.
The 66-year-old took part in a black tie dinner event last night in Glasgow titled Experience with Mel Gibson at the city’s Doubletree by Hilton.
Asked by organisers of the event – which cost upwards of £100 a head – how it felt to be back in Scotland, Gibson replied: “Yeah, good. It’s been 28 years.
“I haven’t been here in 28 years since I was 38 or 39.”
Asked if much has changed, he replied: “I can’t remember, it’s been so long.
“I’ve been to Glasgow but I couldn’t even remember anything about it.”
The Braveheart star tucked into a curry after arriving at Glasgow Airport in a private jet from Budapest on Friday.
He headed straight for Mr Singh’s, near Charing Cross – an Indian restaurant popular with visiting celebrities and former Rangers players and with its own exclusive VIP area.
Gibson was seen laughing with and embracing a member of staff in the street.
And on Saturday night the Hollywood star enjoyed a meal at Tiffney’s Steakhouse in the city’s west end.
In a post on Facebook, the restaurant revealed: “Tonight we welcomed Mel Gibson but he didn’t want us to take his picture. “We can confirm, however, he thoroughly enjoyed his steak.”
Braveheart grossed more than £200million at the box office and won five Academy Awards, including best director, best cinematography and best picture.
In 2020, before the 25th anniversary of the film’s release, Gibson described it as his toughest-ever movie.
Braveheart made Gibson into one of Hollywood’s biggest stars at the time.
