Barclay: Dan still the man for Warriors
JOHN BARCLAY has issued a vote of confidence in under-fire Glasgow Warriors boss Danny Wilson.
A run of four losses on the bounce has left fans questioning whether the Englishman is the right man for next season.
But former Scotland skipper Barclay believes he has done as well as can be expected in tough circumstances and reckons only a significant cash injection will allow Glasgow to reach heights fans expect.
Barclay, who played eight seasons with Glasgow, said: “I know Danny from my time playing in Wales and with the Scotland team. He’s a very good coach and has recruited well with the guys he’s brought in, like Josh McKay and Jack Dempsey.
“But Warriors were decimated by international call-ups. Young guys who have come through that you hope will be there during international windows, like Rory Darge, have then been called up by the Scotland team.
“They have a lot of guys on the injury list too so they are lacking a bit of depth and power.
“And if you look at the teams they have been up against during that run of losses, they all have incredible power. Edinburgh last week were the lightest of the four played and they still had a lot more power.
“The pressure’s on Danny because that’s rugby as a business now but both Scottish teams, and particularly Glasgow, will be looking for a cash injection – because the types of players the coaches and fans want are not cheap.”
