EMBARRASSING

Wright says Wilson has lost dressing room at Glasgow and slams Warriors stars ‘destroying reputations’

DANNY WILSON has come out swinging as he fights to save his job as Glasgow Warriors boss.

The Englishman has been the focal point of fan and media frustration after his team slumped to a humiliating defeat against Leinster in Saturday evening’s URC playoff clash in Dublin.

It is the lowest point in a deeply disappointing second half to the 2021-22 season, leading to widespread calls for his head from supporters and pundits alike.

Former Scotland prop Peter Wright said: “You always hope diehard fans will buy tickets no matter what but after this performance they’ll be second-guessing whether they are prepared to do that. There seem to be loads of problems, looking at the body language of the players.

“Losing isn’t the end of the world, it’s the manner of how you lose – and they lost with no respect.

“They’ve had poor second halves for most of the season but that was embarrassing. “It seems to me the players aren’t buying into the game plan and ultimately the head coach is the man who makes those decisions. It looks like he’s lost the dressing room.

“I’ve been wary not to ask for his head this season because I always thought there was enough talent in that squad. But after that performance, there has to be a serious look at the situation.”

Wright doesn’t lay all the blame at Wilson’s door.

He added: “The biggest concern for me is the senior players don’t seem to be playing – some of the decisions they are making are embarrassing.

“They’re letting themselves down and destroying reputations they’ve built up over a number of years. So, what do you do? Sack all the players? That’s not realistic.

“Or do you sack the coach? I hate to say it but maybe that’s what it needs – a change in that position.”

Wilson says he understands this sort of frustration and insists he is determined to put things right when the squad returns for pre-season ahead of the new campaign in four weeks’ time.

He said: “We need to address that game, put it to bed, then move on and make sure we build with new players coming into the squad next season.

“We brought some new players in at the start of the season but because of injuries and the scheduling, we’ve had to play a lot of rugby with the same players. It’s been really difficult. You want to be able to put it right straight away but we don’t have a chance to do that now.

“We’re going to have to wait until pre-season and use that as fuel to say, ‘That is the standard of the top side in the league and if you are a little bit off, that’s what the best side can do to you’.

“They were ruthless and clinical but we helped them by sitting off them and allowing them to play, which is the mirror opposite of what you need against Leinster.

“If we were bottom of the league and losing at home week in and week out, it would be a different story.

“But if we can perform as we have performed at home, it proves we have what it takes to win games and need to translate that into our performance on the road.”
