I’m backing Steve to take us to Euro 2024

- BY SCOTT BURNS

CRAIG BROWN has backed Steve Clarke to blow away the nation’s World Cup blues by leading Scotland to Euro 2024.

The former national boss walked after losing a Euro 2000 play-off to England but insists Clarke has to remain in position because, despite losing a 2022 World Cup play-off to Ukraine, he is the man to get Scotland back to a major finals.

Brown said: “It was time for me to step down after the play-off but Steve Clarke still has a lot of things to achieve with this squad.

“He has already taken Scotland back to a major finals and there is no doubt in my mind that he can do it again.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Steve took us to Euro 2024.”

Brown knows how Clarke will be feeling after Scotland came up just short in their bid to reach Qatar.

He admitted: “I texted him after the game and told him that I was gutted for him but I was very impressed with the way he handled himself in the press afterwards.

“He was very dignified and honest, acknowledging the better team won. He wasn’t looking for any excuses, take it on the chin and move forward.”

The route forward begins with a Nations League campaign, starting against Armenia at Hampden on Wednesday, followed by a trip to Ireland before the return in Armenia.

Brown added: “Every game is important. It will be tough against Armenia but it is definitely a game we are capable of winning.

“The Nations League group is definitely one I feel we can do well in.

“I’m optimistic going into every Scotland game and this campaign is no different because we have a manager and squad who can do well.”
