ORCAS OUGHTA BE GOT RID OF

Pedestrians ‘tripped on cycle humps and fell’

- BY KAITLIN EASTON

A COUNCIL is facing compensation claims after pedestrians tripped over a cycle lane hump named after a killer whale.

Stephen Cameron, 61, suffered a shattered elbow in May last year after falling while crossing a road in central Glasgow.

He said he had not noticed the Orcas, safety features which are designed to separate cycle lanes from other traffic.

Stephen, who works for a boiler repair company, said: “I was crossing the road after going to the Tesco’s at St Enoch Square and it was quite drizzly outside. I stepped off the pavement and I stepped on to one of the Orcas. I went up in the air and I blacked out.”

He said he suffered some nerve damage and had no sensation in part of his left hand for a while.

Stephen said: “These bumps are not safe and should be removed.”

One other victim spent two days in hospital after falling in the same street a month after Stephen.

The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, was unable to drive or complete daily tasks for three months after breaking her right wrist.

She said: “I had to be sedated while they snapped it back into place. Then I had to have surgery to have a titanium plate and pins put in.”

The pair are pursuing the city council through Thompsons Solictors. Joel Shaw, a senior lawyer, said: “These Orcas are causing havoc and catastrophic injuries. The cases I’m handling are just the tip of the iceberg.”

Glasgow City Council said: “Claims have been received in relation to incidents in Howard Street. These will be processed in the proper manner.”
