The big issues facing Scotland in Yerevan

-

RECORD SPORT takes a look at the five major talking points ahead of our crunch Nations League match with Armenia in Yerevan.

WIN OR BUST: After the dispiriting defeat to Ireland, there’s already no wriggle room for Steve Clarke’s side if they harbour hopes of winning the group.

Scotland need all three points against Armenia – a side they beat 2-0 at Hampden – if they’re to have a realistic chance of emerging top of a section that includes Ukraine.

BACK THREE/BACK FOUR: Clarke originally used a back three to get Kieran Tierney into the side along with Andy Robertson but the Arsenal defender is out injured. Scott McTominay has been played in defence but was moved into the middle against the Irish, leaving Grant Hanley, Scott McKenna and Jack Hendry as the back-three, none of whom are as comfortable as McTominay or Tierney driving forward. Clarke may contemplate returning to a back four.

MIDFIELD REJUVENATED: Often described as the strongest part of the Scotland squad, the midfield was found wanting in the defeats to Ukraine and the Irish. Inspiration, creativity and energy is required against Armenia even though they are ranked 92nd in the world. Callum McGregor and John McGinn are regulars but have had long seasons.

Clarke may opt to start with Billy Gilmour, who was left out of the side in the last two games, while David Turnbull and Lewis Ferguson would bring freshness.

THE LEADING MAN: Che Adams had a day to forget in Dublin but he could point to poor service and support for an ineffective display. Too often he was isolated and outnumbered by Irish defenders. Clarke again brought on Ross Stewart and Jacob Brown and one of those new boys - or both in a two-man attack would offer a different dimension.

BLOOD A NEW KEEPER: Craig Gordon is coming up for 40 later this year but Liam Kelly or Robby McCrorie could be given the opportunity to show what they can do at this level against Armenia.
