2019 Finest Peumo

Carmenere

£8 at Tesco

Made for Tesco by Concha y Toro, this adds a little cabernet sauvignon to Chile’s showcase carmenere grape. The result may be less ripe than some reds but still contains lots of brambly, slightly spicy flavours. Those are reinforced by oaky, vanilla, chocolate and coffee touches and bright acidity.

2021 Madame F Rosé £7.50 – instead of £9 until June 28 – at Sainsbury’s

Despite being made from classic Southern France “pink wine” grapes (grenache and syrah), this is unusual rosé. Ripe fruit flavours and energetic acidity shine through vividly but extended contact with the yeast cells used in fermentation (lees aging) introduces less sweet elements too. The resulting savoury, fennel backdrop vies for attention with the wine’s bright, energetic, grapefruit acidity and supplements its varied apricot, watermelon, orange peel and strawberry flavours.

2021 Aspri Petra Greek Assyrtiko £6.99 at Aldi

Greek wine is seldom cheap and versions from its acclaimed assyrtiko grapes can be half as much again as this well-made Aldi option. Smooth and aromatic, it features restrained, pear and baked apple flavours supported by lively lemon acidity, a creamy texture, flinty savouriness and hints of butterscotch.

ON-WINE SHOPPING 2020 Campo Bonito Blanco £9.99 at www.virginwines. co.uk

Basically, so-called field blends involve vineyards containing a patchwork of varieties (where dead vines were replaced over time with anything handy) and nobody knowing precisely what wine they will produce this year. However, with an aromatic opening but growing intensity, this Spanish field blend is hugely successful. It delivers soft, apple, orange and white plum flavours along with sherbet acidity and a background sweetness within a slightly peachy texture.
