Benidormstar will‘fighttoend’ overkids’rights
SCOTS actress Julie Graham yesterday slammed the decision to roll back the rights of US women following the overturning of Roe v Wade.
The landmark law – which guaranteed a right to abortion across the States – has been ripped up after 50 years.
Former Benidorm star Julie joined a growing list of celebrities from around the world who have spoken out about the move by the US Supreme Court last week.
The 56-year-old said she will “fight to the end” to ensure her children have control over their own bodies.
In an Instagram post, Julie told her followers she has had “two safe abortions” in the past. She also posted a picture of her teenage daughters, Edie and Cyd, calling them “my chosen children”.
The mum of two said: “I had two [safe] abortions. These are my chosen children. My body. My choice. I will fight to the end for their right to choose when and if they decide to have children.”
Julie’s comments come as a host of actors, authors, singers and politicians blasted the overturning of the landmark 1973 case. In the aftermath of the
decision to strike down the federal abortion law, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon described it as “one of the darkest days for women’s rights in my lifetime”.
Half of US states are expected to introduce new restrictions or bans, and abortion access is expected to be cut off for about 36million women.
The ruling means abortions will not be available to women who live in conservative states which had already passed so-called “trigger” laws which ban the procedure.
Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton hit out at the decision, saying: “Today’s Supreme Court opinion will live in infamy as a step backward for women’s rights and human rights.”
Singer Taylor Swift said she was “absolutely terrified”, while Michelle Obama stated she was “heartbroken” that the US is returning to the “painful lessons of a time before Roe was made law of the
land.”
